Sr Henrietta Schneweis OP

Sister Henrietta Schneweis, 101, died Saturday, February 2, 2008, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend.

Born March 16, 1906, in Odin KS, as Mary Anna Schneweis, Sister Henrietta was the daughter of the late Frank and Karoline Fonshner Schneweis. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community September 19, 1921, and pronounced her first vows March 6, 1924. She celebrated eighty years of religious profession in 2004.

Sister Henrietta gave her whole ministerial life to the healthcare ministry, beginning in 1927. After her nursing education, she served as a laboratory tech, Superintendent of Nurses at St. Rose School of Nursing in Great Bend KS, supervisor of OB and surgery, head nurse, and Assistant Administrator of Sacred Heart Hospital in Lamar CO and of St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City KS. Following these ministries she was Nursing Service Director, OB Supervisor and Central Supply Supervisor at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned KS. Her last ministry in healthcare was as convent infirmarian at the motherhouse in Great Bend. She retired in 1992.

Sister Henrietta is survived by one sister: Eleanor Prosser of Great Bend.

Sister Henrietta’s body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, on Sunday, February 3, 2008 at 3:00 p.m., where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2008, with Rev. Marvin Reif presiding. A wake service will be held Monday, February 4, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent (see chapel address above).
