November 20, 1930 ~ December 29, 2007 Sister Mary Urban Hitschmann, 77, died Saturday, December 29, 2007, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend. Born November 20, 1930, in Redwing KS, as Celestine Marie Hitschmann, Sister Mary Urban was the daughter of the late Frank and Veronica Feltes Hitschmann. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community November 1, 1954, and pronounced her first vows June 13, 1957. She celebrated 50 years of religious profession in 2007. Sister Urban worked in healthcare for 32 years of her ministerial life, working as nurse, floor supervisor, head nurse, psychiatric nurse, and chemotherapy, ICU, and ER nurse in the Community’s four hospitals: St. Joseph Memorial in Larned KS, Sacred Heart in Lamar CO, St. Catherine in Garden City KS, and Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend KS. Her second ministry, which she began in 1989, was housing manager at Cedar Park Place in Great Bend, a HUD housing facility for elderly and handicapped. She retired in 2001 due to illness. Sister Mary Urban is survived by one brother, Everett of Hoisington KS. Sister Mary Urban’s body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, on Sunday, December 30, 2007 at 4:30 p.m., where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Monday, December 31, 2007 with Rev. Marvin Reif presiding. A wake service will be held Sunday, December 30, 2007, at 7 p.m. Burial will be in the Sisters' Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent (see chapel address above). Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Friends may call at the convent Sunday evening from 5 - 8 p.m. and on Monday morning until the time of the funeral. |
