Sister Jane Marie McCoy, 97, died Jan. 27, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary in Great Bend. Born Dec. 4, 1909, in Muskogee, Okla., as Margaret Ann McCoy, Sister Jane Marie was the daughter of the late WIlliam and Ollie Ann Logsdon McCoy. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community July 25, 1927, and pronounced her first vows Aug. 13, 1930. She celebrated 75 years of religious profession in 2005.
Sister Jane Marie had a teaching career which spanned 1929 to 1971. She taught at various times in all the grades from 1-8 in 15 different parochial schools in Kansas and Oklahoma, and was principal of seven different schools during that time. After retiring from teaching she was chancery secretary in Lincoln, Neb.; a financial and secretarial assistant in several positions at the motherhouse in Great Bend; a member of the local convent coordinating team; and lastly, statewide treasurer of the Dominican Sisters’ Mission in Nigeria. She had been in the convent infirmary since 2006.
Sister Jane Marie has no surviving brothers or sisters.
Sister Jane Marie’s body was taken to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, on Saturday and it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the convent, with the Rev. Reginald Urban presiding. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday. Both the wake and the funeral service will be held at the convent, 3600 Broadway. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery.
