Sister Isabel Miller OP, 90, of Great Bend, died Monday, Feb. 5, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary at Great Bend. Born Dec. 2, 1916, in Catherine, as Isabel Theresa Miller, Sister Isabel was the daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Wasinger Miller. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community July 26, 1931, and pronounced her first vows Aug. 20, 1934. She celebrated 70 years of religious profession in 2004.
Sister Isabel gave herself to domestic ministry from 1935-1942 in the Dominican Sisters’ missions. In 1942 she began a ministry in the diet kitchen and main kitchen of St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City and St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend, later supervising both of these and in Sacred Heart Hospital in Lamar, Colo. In 1976, after completing studies in cosmetology, she came to the motherhouse in Great Bend to serve in that capacity for the sisters there, also assuming other duties such as sacristan, and car maintenance. Due to illness she retired at the motherhouse in 2000.
Sister Isabel’s body was brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great bend, at 4:30 p.m. Monday, where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Reginald Urban presiding. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent, 3600 Broadway.
Sister Isabel has no surviving brothers or sisters. Memorials in honor of Sister Isabel may be sent to Dominican Sisters Ministry Fund, Office of Mission and Ministry, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, KS 67530-3692. Friends may call at the convent from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Today and Wednesday, and from 9 a.m. to the time of service Thursday.
