December 7, 1916 ~ November 27, 2008 By Sister Elaine Osborne OP Sister Hermina Oeding, 91, died Thursday, November 27, 2008, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend. Born December 7, 1916, in Willowdale, Kansas, as Mary Anna Oeding, Sister Hermina was the daughter of the late Herman and Mary Heckenkamp Oeding. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community July 19, 1931, and pronounced her first vows August 20, 1934. She celebrated seventy years of religious profession in 2004. Sister Hermina began her life-long ministry as a teacher in 1934 in Fowler KS. She taught grades first through eighth, for nearly sixty years in various schools in Kansas and Nebraska. In many of these parochial elementary schools she was both teacher and principal. After 1993 when she returned to the motherhouse in Great Bend, she served in various duties at the motherhouse, especially as chauffeur for the Sisters at the motherhouse. She has been in the convent infirmary since 2002. Sister Hermina is survived by her Dominican Sisters’ Community, and two brothers and two sisters: Joseph of Kingman KS, Lawrence of Spivey KS, Anna Wright of Council Grove KS, and Martha Rohlman of Kingman KS. Sister Hermina’s body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, on Sunday, November 30, 2008, at 4:00 p.m., where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2008, with Rev. Benjamin Dande MSFS officiating. A wake service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Monday, December 1, 2008. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent (see chapel address above). Memorials in honor of Sister Hermina may be sent to: Dominican Sisters Ministry Fund, Office of Mission and Ministry, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, KS 67530-3692.
