Sr Ignatius Galvan OP

Sister Ignatius Galvan, 85, died Saturday, October 11, 2008, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend.

Born March 1, 1923, in Mulvane KS, as Rosenda Galvan, Sister Ignatius was the daughter of the late Severiano and Donaciana Loera Galvan. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community January 1, 1947, and pronounced her first vows June 10, 1949. She celebrated fifty years of religious profession in 1999.

Sister Ignatius began her ministry in nursing in 1949. She served as a night duty nurse, in the emergency room, and as ward secretary. Later in San Antonio TX she served in Las Hermanas Health Service. Her ministry also included several months as a missionary nurse in Nigeria, West Africa. Her health was not good after 1980 and she retired at the motherhouse in Great Bend.

Sister Ignatius is survived by her Dominican Sisters’ community and three brothers and four sisters: Cather of El Paso TX, Gayle of Woodbridge VA, Lawrence of Derby KS, Felisa Galvan of Wichita KS, Magdalena Matochik Jr of Fort Edward NY, Panfila Galvan of Wichita KS, and Mary Ellen Lakomski of Vance SC.

Sister Ignatius’s body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, on Monday, October 13, 2008, at 4:00 p.m., where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 15, 2008 with Rev. Dermot Tighe presiding. A wake service will be held Tuesday, October 14, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent (see chapel address above).
