Heartland Farm kicks off 20th anniversary with a new alpaca, and a Great Bend Chamber Coffee Event

It’s not often that Great Bend Chamber members  drive 13 miles out of town in the middle of the morning for a Chamber Coffee.  But on Thursday morning, May 29, 2008, that is just what they did, and they were treated to a fun, educational, and entertaining display of the Heartland Farm.

As chamber members arrived at the 80 acre homestead, they had a chance to wander outside, watch and feed the alpacas from hand, and meet the newest cria (baby alpaca) who was just born in May.

Sr Terry Wasinger introduced the Heartland Farm staff, and then explained the origin and purpose of the Heartland Farm, which is a ministerial project of the Dominican Sisters of Great Bend, and home for an intentional ecumenical Christian community of adults and families who believe in and work for an interdependent healing of the earth and care of persons.

After a round of questions, a few chamber announcements, and drawings for door prize winners, Chamber members continued to look around, visit, watch a spinning demonstration, and purchase Heartland Farm goods.

Despite the unusual distance for a Great Bend Chamber Coffee, there was a relaxed, fun, curious, light-hearted and grateful atmosphere at the Farm on this Thursday morning; one participant said as she left, “We should do this more often!”  For more information about the farm, click here.
