Sr Sophia Vesecky OP

Sister Sophia Vesecky, 92, died Tuesday, March 4, 2008, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend.

Born August 3, 1915, in Timken, KS, as Clara Bernadine Vesecky, Sister Sophia was the daughter of the late Frank and Sophia Blazek Vesecky. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community August 20, 1933, and pronounced her first vows August 10, 1936. She celebrated seventy years of religious profession in 2006.

Sister Sophia ministered in domestic work in the Sisters’ hospitals and missions in Kansas and Oklahoma for over fifty years before she retired at the motherhouse in the early 1990s.

Sister Sophia is survived by one nephew and four nieces: John Vesecky, Mary Boone, Rosalee Reitcheck, Margaret Klassen, and Lois Niemann.

Sister Sophia’s body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at 4:00 p.m., where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 7, 2008, with Rev. Charles J Mazouch presiding. A wake service will be held Thursday, March 6, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent (see chapel address above).
